Task 20: Cook To Comfort

We have partnered with Emergency Kit Cook-Off now for several years.  This has always been a fun challenge to see what recipes individuals can come up with using items that one may find in your kit.  This year, our friends have put a new twist on their annual cook off challenge…

DAY 20 Challenge: 1 pt  This year, Emergency Kit Cook-Off challenges you to cook to comfort! During September, Kit Cook-Off will highlight a food theme that we all enjoy—“Comfort Foods.”  This challenge encourages you to give an emergency preparedness spin to your favorite comfort food recipes, whether that is nonperishable pizza, apple pie, or chocolate chip cookies! You can also submit your own unique nonperishable comfort food recipe.  Specifically, we challenge you to:

  1. Take a “Comfort Food” recipe and re-invent it in a nonperishable way. Use onlynonperishable pantry and kit items, including (but not restricted to) seasonings, condiments, sweeteners, and potable water.

  1. Use manual tools (e.g., can openers and hand whisks) instead of modern appliances— especially microwaves— in the preparation.Use the oven and/or stovetop if you must, BUTwe challenge you to use alternative, safe heating sources if possible.

PROOF OF COMPLETION:  Submit your recipe by following these steps:

  • Go to EmergencyKitCookoff.org
  • Click the “Submit a Recipe” button in the upper right corner of any webpage.
  • Submit a Recipe according to the guidelines outlined under the “Participate” tab at EmergencyKitCookoff.org/participate.
  • Include a photo of your delicious finished product with your submission. When you click “Submit a Recipe,” you will see the “browse” button. Click this to include your photo. Please include a picture that is less than 100 MB and is in png, gif, jpg, or jpeg file format. A selfie snapped with your smart phone will do just fine!
  • Finally, comment on 30Days, 30Ways  Facebook page or Tweet using the #30Days30Ways hashtag that you submitted a recipe to Emergency Kit Cook-Off.
  • Recipes submitted to Emergency Kit Cook-Off by September 30th will receive an emergency kit cook-off apron, while supplies last.

Level Up: 5 pts  For today’s level up, would love to hear about how you came up with your recipe.  Share what hurdles you may have encountered and if there are items you will add to to your kit in the future.

Task 19: Arrrgh Weeee Ones

Arrgh Matey….. Did you know if you look, you can find that just about any day is a special day for something.  Chocolate Day, Grandparents Day, Hot Dog Day, Beer Day, even Dog Day are just a few.  Its obvious that some are more important than others but there is one that a friend introduced me to several years ago that always makes me smile, and has been a part of 30 Days, 30 Ways from almost the beginning.  That day is today, and yes… It’s National Talk Like a Pirate Day!!!

As we were putting together this years challenge, we discussed what would be a good match for this infamous day.  As you can see by the title, we decided it was a great day to bring your kiddo’s into your emergency planning.

DAY 19 Challenge: 1 pt  Kiddo’s have fire drills at schools.  Some have lock down drills, and even earthquake drills.  They can tell you where they are to go to make sure everyone is accounted for.   But what about at home?  Do your little’s know where your primary and secondary meeting locations are?  Today we want you to review these plans, and share with us what you learned.

Level Up: 5 pts  For your level up today, we want you to not only think about meeting places if everyone is home, but what about meeting up at times when family members may be at work, school or other places.  What plan do you have to connect with loved ones that everyone is accounted for?

Task 18: Utility

Not too long ago, I was told of a story.  This couple had left their teenage kids home one evening as they went out for a long overdue date night.  After having a wonderful evening out, they returned home to find the kids frantically trying to clean up water.   The hot water heater had broke, spilling gallons of water.  The kids were doing their best to sop up all the water with every towel they could find to no avail.  The father realized right then and there, he hadn’t shown the kids how to shut off the main water connection coming into the house, or any of the other utilities.  The father realized it was time to change that, and showed each member of the family where and how to shut off each of the utilities around the house.

DAY 18 Challenge: 1 pt  Today we want you to make sure you share with all members of your family where all utility emergency shut offs are located.

Level Up: 5 pts  For today’s Level Up, we want you to create a map of your home that identifies all of your emergency shutoff’s and add it to your kit.

Task 17: Out With the Old, In With the New

Have you ever found that one container that somehow got pushed to the back of the frig?  Outdated and possibly growing spores for penicillin…

Sometimes, when things are out of site, we forget about keeping them up to date.  It’s important to think about the items we keep in our emergency kits, and ensuring they are up to date when they may be needed.

DAY 17 Challenge: 1 pt  For today’s challenge we want you to take a look at the items in your kit, like we did ours.  Share with us what you found.  Share if you found anything that needed updated your plans to replace it.

Level Up: 5 pts  For today’s Level Up, we want you update any items in your kit, and share with us, a system for how you will remember to check your kit semi-annually to ensure everything is up to date.

Task 16: ICE ICE Box

Many people have added ICE (In Case of Emergency) contacts in their phones, which we think is an important step.  Yet, we can think of other ICE items that one should have easily accessible or backed up someplace just in case.

Being able to access necessary pieces of documentation after an emergency can save a lot of time, and headaches.  Today we want to focus on suggestions and ideas to help everyone get better prepared.

DAY 16 Challenge: 1 pt  Today we want you to review your Important Documents Back up.  Share how you back-up important documents and what type of documents you keep duplicates of.  Do you keep paper, electronic or both?  We want suggestions of software, tools, organizers that helped you get everything together.  To protect everyone’s privacy, we want your responses to this challenge to stay general.  Talk about general categories and types of documents you would have in each category, please do not show specific documents.

Level Up: 10 pts  For an additional 10 points today we want you to share what you discovered today as your reviewed your documents.  Where there items outdated or items you had omitted?  Did you research a new tool or purchase an item to better organize your important documents?

Task 15: P.A.S.S.

Growing up in Montana, it was part of my gear to carry bear spray when out hiking. But after participating in a demonstration about actually using bear spray did I realize that just carrying it wasn’t enough.  Being able to calmly retrieve the spray, pull the safety, aim and squeeze all while having a grizzly charging you took a lot more practice.

When we talk fire safety, we usually quickly mention fighting a fire yourself, and move onto getting out.. and yes, we want to make sure you get out safely.  That is very important, but just like using the bear spray, owning a fire extinguisher, and actually practicing and discharging one are two different things.

DAY 15 Challenge: 1 pt  Today we want you to demonstrate to us how to properly use a fire extinguisher.  We want you to take a minute or so and walk through the steps in discharging a fire extinguisher. Don’t forget to explain P.A.S.S. to us.  Be sure to tell us know where and when you wouldn’t try to extinguish a fire on your own.

Level Up: 5 pts  Share with us other important Fire Safety items that you have in your home that could be helpful during an emergency or disaster.

Task 14: How Much?

It is no coincidence that today’s challenge falls on the 14th.  That number has a special meaning especially if you live in the Pacific North West.  Across the country, you will see varying days recommended of preparedness items from 3, 7, 10, to even 14… Yup here in the PNW, because of our risk of earthquakes, you will see local preparedness experts pushing 2 weeks ready.   Experts recommend 1 Gallon of Water Per Person Per Day.  No matter if you are thinking 3 days, 7 days or even 14 days, that seems overwhelming when you start multiplying by the number of members in your household including pets!!  Today’s challenge we will look at storing water and hopefully see some creative solutions to keeping water stored for emergencies and disasters.

DAY 14 Challenge: 1 pt  For today’s challenge, we want to see your water!  Share a short video clip reviewing where and how you store water.  Be sure to review any creative solutions you have come up with to help store water.  Be sure to give us an idea how many folks in your household you are storing for!

Level Up: 15 pts  For today’s Level Up, we want you to think of some alternative water sources you may have access to around your home.  Give us a tour of these sources and any special items you may need to be able to access them.

Cooking Class, CPR Class, Amateur Radio Class, CERT Training, EMT Training, Paint Class, First Aid Training….

If you search hard enough, you can find a class for anything!! The one class I still would love to actually take is underwater basket weaving!  Joking aside, learning new skills are important to us even as adults to challenge and learn new things, but taking classes that could also help us survive a disaster or emergency are an added bonus.  Toady we want you to think about skills you have and potentially skills that would be beneficial for you to acquire to help prepare you for an emergency.

DAY 13 Challenge: 1 pt  Today we want you to identify a class you would like to take to increase your skills to help you and your loved ones in a disaster or emergency.   Find class information and take steps to register or get on a waiting list for upcoming classes.

Level Up: 15 pts  Many of you already have addtional skills or training’s you have taken.  For today’s level up we want you to look at your skill set and think about who you can share your knowledge with!   We then want you to create a plan or video highlighting that knowledge to share with others!  This Level up is worth 15 pts!!

Task 12: Weather or Not

It’s a Watch!  No it’s a Warning!!  Wait it’s an Advisory…  Oofta…. When it comes to the weather and the difference in meanings between what these terms mean, it can be confusing.  Even among public safety officials I have witnessed first hand confusion in the difference between these terms.

How and why do they elevate?  Why should we understand the difference?  Does more and more warning levels confuse individuals when actions should be taken?  All some good questions that I hope today’s challenge will help us answer!

DAY 12 Challenge: 1 pt  Explain the difference between a Watch, Warning and Advisory IN YOUR OWN WORDS!  No copying directly from a National Weather Service website explaining those.. Create a picture, drawing or video explaining these.

Level Up: 25 pts  Ever wanted to be a weather forecaster/ personality?  Here is your chance to create your own PSA regarding these topics.  Be creative and build some type of video explaining the difference between a Watch, Warning and Advisory.

We will be calling on actual NWS meteorologists  helping us review these entries.  Who knows, your idea and or you may become part of a campaign for the NWS!!

Task 10: Beef Jerky and Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans!

Lets face it, disasters can be stressful, and during stressful times we all can use a little comfort.  That could be a food item, or or a special item.  Anything that helps calm our nerves and provides a level of comfort during stressful times.

For me, that’s beef jerky and chocolate covered coffee beans. I’m a coffee lover,  I know having access to a good cup of coffee may be difficult.  The chocolate covered coffee beans are an important substitute for me.  It seems like I actually buy these items in bulk.  I literally keep them at work, home, and sometimes in the vehicle.

DAY 10 Challenge: 1 pt  Share with us your comfort item and why.  Also let us know how if its a food item, you rotate this item in your kit.

Level Up: 5 pts   For today’s level up, we want you to think about your comfort items.  If it is a food item, do you feel comfortable you have enough to ride out a disaster or emergency.  Tell us why.
